John Seffrin, the president of the American Cancer Society, calls this "a national health-care crisis of under-treated pain." "Nearly all cancer pain can be relieved, but fewer than half of our patients report adequate pain relief," Rebecca Kirch, the society's associate director of policy, told a pain seminar in Washington last week. Hospitals do a little better than that in managing pain for patients with all kinds of illnesses, according to a survey to be published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Read Complete Story

Acupuncture Reduces Painful Side Effects of Breast Cancer Treatments

Ancient Therapy Challenges Benefits of Modern Medicine. A new medical study finds that acupuncture, an ancient form of healing that has been around for thousands of years, is as good as, or better than modern medicine in helping ease the side effects of breast cancer treatment. The findings, which were presented today at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology's annual meeting in Boston, suggest that this ancient therapy can give cancer patients a wide range of benefits above modern medicine.

Read Complete Story

Nerves Tangle, and Back Pain Becomes a Toothache

When people have a heart attack, a classic symptom is shooting pain down the left arm. Both are examples of what doctors call referred pain, or pain in an area of the body other than where it originates. There is growing interest in acupuncture as a treatment for a range of conditions. For neck pain sufferers, acupuncture may be a better treatment option than spinal injections, according to a recent SpineUniverse survay. 43.6% of acupuncture patients were satisfied or even very satisfied with their treatment. Only 41.3% of injection therapy patients reported satisfaction with the treatment. That's shocking news for patients and medical companies alike: after billions of dollars of pharmacological research on injection medication, acupuncture--a traditional Chinese are of healing--seems to make patients happier and feel less pain.

Read complete story.

Acupuncture May Help Menstrual Pain

When a woman has her period, she can feel like she already has pins and needles in her abdomen. A recent study found that this complimentary therapy reduced pain by 36% in people with advanced cancer. Acupuncture has been used in the United States for many years as a treatment for chronic muscle pain. Only recently, however, has it been tried as a remedy for other types of pain, including cancer pain, said Gary Deng, MD, PhD. It especially dispels cold and dampness. Today, indirect moxibustion involves burning a moxa stick an inch or more above the skin, or combining moxibustion with acupuncture. Stars can now amp up their assets with acupuncture. During 16 half-hour treatments, needles are inserted into breasts to transfer pulsations from an electrical current.
