Medical science has learned a great deal about the causes of pain and ways to relieve it, pain experts say, but for a host of reasons, the treatment of pain and suffering has improved hardly at all in recent years. John Seffrin, the president of the American Cancer Society, calls this "a national health-care crisis of under-treated pain." "Nearly all cancer pain can be relieved, but fewer than half of our patients report adequate pain relief," Rebecca Kirch, the society's associate director of policy, told a pain seminar in Washington last week. Hospitals do a little better than that in managing pain for patients with all kinds of illnesses, according to a survey to be published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Patient survey shows neck pain sufferers more satisfied with acupuncture than with spinal injections. For neck pain sufferers, acupuncture may be a better treatment option than spinal injections, according to a recent SpineUniverse survay. 43.6% of acupuncture patients were satisfied or even very satisfied with their treatment. Only 41.3% of injection therapy patients reported satisfaction with the treatment. When a woman has her period, she can feel like she already has pins and needles in her abdomen. But a new German study says acupuncture needles may actually relieve menstrual cramps, making females more productive during that time of the month, Reuters reports. Since the study compared acupuncture patients with a group who received no treatment, however, the patients might have experienced the "placebo effect," said Dr. Claudia Witt of Charite University Medical Center in Berlin. "Nevertheless, our study showed that acupuncture was beneficial for women if offered as part of the health insurance system," the researchers write in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Cancer patients who aren't getting enough pain control from conventional medications may be able to find relief in the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture. A recent study found that this complimentary therapy reduced pain by 36% in people with advanced cancer. Acupuncture has been used in the United States for many years as a treatment for chronic muscle pain. Only recently, however, has it been tried as a remedy for other types of pain, including cancer pain, said Gary Deng, MD, PhD. Deng is an internist who specializes in integrative (complementary) medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
